It all started in 2022, when one of our customers wanted to fully automate the relining process for a grinding mill. This ambition aligned perfectly with Bradken’s vision to improve mine site safety standards and reline efficiency across the global mining industry. Supported by our technical experts, we got to work immediately. By partnering closely with our customer and reline equipment suppliers. Bradken successfully achieved the world’s first partially automated installation of the grinding mill liners- a substantial milestone for the industry.
In less than three years of its launch, Bradken’s MillSafe® Solutions have become a game changer in grinding mill relining safety.
The earlier scenario: Traditional Mill Relining
Traditionally, relining a grinding mill required the mill team to enter the interior of the mill. The entire relining process could take more than 100 hours to complete.
Before entry. the grinding mill had to be isolated and declared safe for personnel to enter the confined space. worn liners were removed, and the mill shell was cleaned in preparation for installing new liners . These new steel liners could weigh up to five tonnes each.
Traditionally, steel liners were bolted manually from inside the mill, this meant workers spent long hours operating close to heavy machinery and suspended loads for hours at a time. Adequate lighting and ventilation were essential to maintain a safe working environment, yet the use of heavy equipment still made mill relining one of the most hazardous tasks for reline crews.
How Bradken’s MillSafe® solutions enhanced the safety of the industry?
Bradken’s MillSafe® Solutions significantly reduce exposure to potential hazards by improving the relining process making it both safer and faster.
What are MillSafe® solutions?
The MillSafe® suite comprises a range of products designed to improve safety, efficiency, and control during mill relining:
- MillSafe® Bolting System: A safer and more efficient solution for liner installation and removal for AG mill, SAG mill and ball mills by allowing liners to be bolted from outside the grinding mill.
- MillSafe ®Backing: A replacement for traditional grinding mill rubber sheeting or rubber lining and provides a safer relining environment.
- MillSafe® Liner Location stripes: Provides visual guidance to deliver a safer and more efficient liner installation.
- MillSafe® Combined Corner Liners: Designed to improve reline safety, while significantly reducing reline times, and part inventory.
- MillSafe® Worn Liner Removal with RME INSIDEOUT™ Technology: Removes worn liners from the mill machine shell wall directly to provide a safer and more efficient liner removal process.
“Miners are always looking for ways to reduce risk to their personnel and the MillSafe® suite of products presents that opportunity,” says Craig Faulkner, Bradken principal product manager.
