Bradken CEO Simon Linge participated in the Vinnies Newcastle CEO Sleepout for the first time last night and says it’s an experience he’ll not soon forget.
With temperatures falling to 7.3 degrees Celsius, the lowest overnight temperature recorded for Newcastle this month, Simon said the cold conditions made for a rough night.
“With some soup and bread in my stomach and a thin piece of cardboard between myself and a concrete floor, sleep was a little hard to come by,” Simon said.
“But my limited experience of what it’s like to sleep rough is nothing compared to what people experiencing homelessness go through on any given night.
“It has served as a firm reminder to me of the importance of businesses and individuals reaching out to support their local communities in any and every way they’re able to.
“I believe a healthy and productive workplace can only come from a healthy society and we all have a part to play in making sure major issues like homelessness are addressed.”
Offering his appreciation Simon said he was blown away by the amount of support he received that has resulted in him raising more than $8,500 so far for Vinnies.
“I am truly grateful to my friends and family, my colleagues both new and old and to everyone that offered their moral and financial support for my participation in this event,” Simon said.
“The generosity has been overwhelming – I began my campaign with the goal of raising $5,000. To be sitting today with thousands of dollars above that target is very humbling.”
With such a positive response to the company’s involvement in 2019, Simon said Bradken is keen to be involved in the CEO Sleepout again in 2020.
“Other members of our team have expressed their interest in participating so next year I may pass the sleeping bag and beanie to someone else or we may even take on a team approach. Either way we’re hoping to be there.”
Donations to the 2019 CEO Sleepout can be made until 31 July. If you would like to contribute to Mr Linge’s fundraising efforts and show Vinnies your support, head to https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/simonlinge/newcastle.
